Gingival Graft

What Is a Gum Graft (Gingival Grafting)?

A gum graft, also known as gingival grafting, refers to a group of surgical techniques used to harvest gum tissue and transplant it to an area where there is insufficient gingival tissue. The procedure is most often performed to restore dental aesthetics.

This treatment aims to reinforce or reposition the gum tissue around the teeth, particularly in cases of gum recession. To do so, the dentist removes a small section of the patient’s own gum tissue and repositions it onto the area requiring treatment.

Why Consider a Gum Graft?

A gum graft may be recommended in several situations:

1. In Cases of Gum Recession

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth recedes or wears away, often leading to increased tooth sensitivity.

A gum graft helps reduce discomfort and sensitivity, particularly when consuming hot or cold foods and beverages.

From an aesthetic perspective, receding gums expose the tooth roots and create visible gaps between the teeth and the gum line. A gum graft restores a healthier gum contour and contributes to a more harmonious and aesthetic smile.

2. In Preparation for Dental Implants or Orthodontic Treatment

A gum graft may also be indicated to strengthen the soft tissue environment around teeth undergoing orthodontic movement.

In cases of missing teeth, grafting can help shape and thicken the tissue around the future implant site, ensuring optimal stability and aesthetic integration.
